Roku Adds New Features to its Roku 2 and 3 Boxes - But No 4K Yet

Dateline: 04/07/2015
When you think Streaming, for many, the Roku brand is what comes to mind, as the pioneering company not only provides several ways to access streaming content (Box, Stick, and TVs with Roku Built-in), but also provides access to the most streaming content using a single device (over 2,000 channels and still growing).

Now, to make navigation through all those content options more efficient, Roku has announced upgrades to its Roku 2 and 3 plug-in boxes.

First up, there is the new-and-improved top-of-the-line Roku 3. New capabilities include Voice Search (activated by a button on the remote). The Roku 3 also continues to provide a headphone jack on the remote which allows convenient private listening. The Roku 3 is priced at $99.

Next, the mid-line Roku 2 has been upgraded with a new processor so now it matches the speed and performance of the Roku 3 (minus voice search and headphone options). The Roku 2 is priced at $69.

Finally, Roku has also added new capabilities to is Mobile App (available for Android now, improvements for the iOS version coming soon). The mobile app provides enhanced content search and discovery navigation. The Mobile App is free for owners of Roku devices.

The Roku Boxes are standalone units that connect to your home network/internet via Ethernet or Built-in Wifi. Also, the Roku 2 and 3 both have USB ports which allow access to content stored Flash Drives or other compatible USB devices. Your TV and home theater receiver (if you are also using your Roku box to access full surround sound audio) both must have an HDMI input (the Roku 2 and 3 cannot be connected to older TVs without HDMI connections).

720p and 1080p resolution support is provided (content dependent). Roku has not announced the availability of a 4K-compatible unit at this time...Stay tuned.
