- 1). Choose the design that you want to turn into a rug design. Very simple designs can be turned into a small project such as a pillow. Larger designs with a lot of detail will need to be copied and turned into a larger project such as a large rug or wall hanging.
- 2). Use a copy machine to create the largest copy of your design that you can. This will aid in transferring the most detail to the rug base.
- 3). Draw graph lines over the entire picture design. Draw the lines lightly with a pencil, but make sure that you can see all of the lines. Make the graph lines close enough so that each box will include no more than two colors of the design.
- 4). Purchase a rug base that already has graph lines drawn onto it. Count out the number of squares across and down on your pattern, and mark off that many squares on the rug base. This will be your entire pattern area.
- 5). Look in the upper left hand square of the pattern. Draw that same element in the upper left hand square of the rug base.Transfer the design, graph square by graph square, to the rug base using a sharpie. Use colored markers to indicate where each color of yarn should go. Go across the entire design and finish the entire top row before continuing on to the second row.
