- 1). Sketch a design for your mosaic using a picture you like as inspiration, or your own design. The ideas are almost endless, but beginners should start with a simple shape. For an advanced assignment, use a picture of a classic painting as your reference design. Whatever you choose, remember that the more complex your reference drawing, the more complex (and time-consuming) your mosaic piece.
- 2). Make a stack of magazine pages, calendar pages, or unwanted photos to use as mosaic material. When you have a dozen or more pages, tear each page into very small pieces, 1 to 3 inches each. Vary the shape of the pieces. It will also be helpful to group like colors in separate piles, or re-use an empty egg carton to separate your colors.Use the reference picture to help you with your color choices. If desired, lightly label the names of colors on your sketch design.
- 3). Spread a layer of newspaper to protect your work surface. Begin your mosaic by taking a few pieces of paper at a time and arranging them on your design sketch. Use your reference picture to help you choose the most appropriate colors. When you are satisfied, glue the mosaics to the paper by spreading a thin, even coat of glue directly on the heavy paper. Set the mosaic pieces on top of the glue and smooth down with your fingers. Tear the magazine pieces into smaller shapes as needed. Continue gluing piece until the design is finished.
- 4). Let the glue dry completely. If some mosaics have extended over the edges of your page, use scissors or a craft knife to cut the excess away and straighten the edges. To give your work a professional touch, spray or brush over the page with a coat of sealant.
