- 1). Lay down the first piece of hardwood flooring beginning at any corner of the room. Position the groove side closest to the wall and the tongue side facing out. Leave a gap of 1/8 inch from the edge of the flooring and the wall to allow for expansion.
- 2). Position a nail gun along the tongue of the board 4 inches from the bottom of the first piece. Hold the nail gun at a slight angle and press the trigger. Insert a 1/2-inch brad nail through the tongue of the board and into the subflooring underneath. Insert a nail every 4 inches along the tongue of the first piece of hardwood flooring.
- 3). Install all of the remaining pieces of the first row in the same manner along the first side of the wall. Set one piece above the previous piece. Inspect the area and verify that the first side has been properly installed. Check that there are no nails sticking up and that all the hardwood flooring is secure to the subflooring.
- 4). Lay out the first piece of the second row beginning at the corner where you started. Position the piece so the groove of the second row is facing the tongue of the first. Hammer the two pieces together with a rubber mallet. Hit the mallet along the center of the hardwood flooring until the tongue of the first piece is securely in the groove of the second piece.
- 5). Set the second piece above the first and install it in the same manner. Continue around the room until hardwood flooring is covering all of the subflooring.
