Silk flowers are an economical and long-lasting alternative to fresh flowers. Arrangements of silk flowers lend color and style to any environment in which they are placed. Silk flowers, however, have many uses apart from traditional flower arranging. They lend themselves well to a variety of craft projects. - You can easily make an assortment of enchanting hair accessories with silk flowers. After removing the bloom from the stem, attach the bloom to a metal hair clip, available at a beauty supply or drug store, using hot glue. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly, and slide the clip into your hair for a fresh-looking, flower-embellished hairstyle. Silk roses, camellias and gardenias are ideal for this craft.
- Create charming brooches (pins) using the blooms from silk flower stems. With hot glue, affix the blooms to metal pin backs, available at a craft supply store. After the glue dries thoroughly, pin the blooming brooch onto your jacket, blouse, purse, scarf, or other garment or accessory. Consider using silk peonies, roses or violets.
- Make festive warm-weather sandals using the blooms from silk flower stems. Attach the silk flower blooms to the rubber tops of a pair of flip flops using hot glue. You can attach just one bloom to each sandal, or cover the tops of the flip-flops in an abundance of flowers. Popular bloom options are silk daisy chrysanthemums or gerbera daisies.
- Embellish a plain wooden box with silk flowers--especially roses--for a romantic place to store treasures. Cover the entire top of a plain wooden box with the blooms. Affix the blooms to the box with hot glue.
- Create whimsical and romantic throw pillows for a sofa or chair by embellishing them with silk flowers. Use a needle and thread to sew the bases of the blooms onto the pillows. Add one bloom to a pillow, or cover the entire front of a pillow with blooms. Try using silk peonies, roses and gerbera daisies.
- Remove the blooms from a silk flower that features numerous small florets, such as a blossoming cherry branch, a hydrangea or a lilac stem. Remove the individual florets and incorporate them into a beaded necklace or bracelet. Thread a needle with beading thread. Push the needle through the florets and slide them onto the beading thread, alternating them with beads to make a flower-embellished piece of jewelry.
- Attach a silk flower to the top of a pencil or pen for a fanciful writing instrument. Remove the bloom and about 1 to 2 inches of stem from a silk flower and position it so it is directly on top of the pencil or pen with the stem pressing against the side of the pencil or pen. Wind green floral tape around the stem and the entire length of the pencil or pen to hold the bloom in place. Try topping your pencil or pen with a brightly colored gerbera daisy, an elegant lily or a romantic rose.
