- 1). Lay the satin fabric on a flat surface and place an old tank top on top of the fabric to use as a template. Trace around the tank top and then measure approximately 1/2-inch outside of the traced line. Cut along the new extended 1/2-inch measurement and use this cutout as a template to trace and then cut out another piece of fabric.
- 2). Place one of the satiny cutouts on the flat surface with the good side (if there is one) facing upward and align the second satiny cutout on top of the first with the good side facing downward. Use a straight stitch to sew the side of the cutouts together, approximately 1/8-inch away from the edges. Leave approximately 1/2-inch of fabric at the bottom of the shirt. Sew the top of the arm holes together using the same stitch.
- 3). Place the coordinating single fold bias tape around the arm holes and pin it in place, so that the tape is in front of the rough edge of the fabric. Cut off any excess tape. Repeat this step for the other arm hole. Use a straight stitch on the sewing machine or by hand to sew the bias tape all around the arm hole.
- 4). Measure the circumference of the opening at the neck of the shirt. Add 20 percent to that measurement and cut a piece of 2-inch-wide coordinating fabric to that length.
- 5). Fold the coordinating fabric in half so that it makes a thin, long piece with the good side of the fabric facing outward. Use a basting stitch to sew the edges of the fabric together. Cut the thread and tug on it gently to create ruffles in the fabric. Sew the short edges of the fabric together.
- 6). Align the ruffle circle with the neckline of the sleeveless shirt and pin it in place. Sew the ruffle to the front neckline and then the back neckline of the shirt using a straight stitch.
- 7). Turn the shirt so that the bottom edge is facing you and fold over approximately 1/2-inch of fabric all the way around the bottom and pin the fold in place. Iron the fold to crease a smooth crease and then use a straight stitch to sew the seam in place approximately 1/8-inch away from the rough edge of the fabric. If you would like a gently flowing shirt then you are finished. If you would like an elastic hemmed shirt, continue to the next step.
- 8). Measure the circumference of the bottom of the shirt and subtract approximately 15 percent from the measurement. Cut a piece of elastic to that length and tie a safety or diaper pin to one end of the elastic. Thread it through the gap in the bottom hem of the shirt. Tie the two ends of the elastic together. Turn the shirt right-side-out for a completed sleeveless shirt.
