How to Remove Nicotine Smell & Stains

    • 1). Remove the stains before removing the odor. Remove stains from glass and ceramic, such a vases and bowls, by scrubbing with soap and hot salt water. Remove stains from all clothes or fabric material. Soak cotton in vinegar before washing to work out the stain. This may take several tries, depending on how bad the stain is. Once the stain is removed from these objects the odor will be gone as well.

    • 2). Mix together 1 gallon of hot water, 1/2 cup of borax, 1 tbsp. of ammonia and 1/2 tsp. of liquid dish detergent in a large bucket. Stir the mixture with a paint stick or an object that isn't used for cooking. This mixture will be used to remove the stains from your walls and carpet.

    • 3). Use latex gloves when cleaning the walls and floor. Use a cloth and sponge to thoroughly scrub off the stains using the stain removal mixture. Rinse the cloth or sponge before soaking in the bucket after each use. Once finished, rinse the wall or floor with hot water.

    • 4). Remove stains from carpet using a carpet shampooer or steamer to thoroughly get out all of the spots in the carpet. Consider having the carpet professionally cleaned if the nicotine stains are excessive.

    • 5). Use scented candles around your house once you've removed all stains to deodorize any remaining nicotine smells. Remove the odor from furnishings, like a sofa or bed, by sprinkling baking soda over the areas where the odor is present. Let the baking soda sit for an hour or more and then vacuum up the baking soda.
