- 1). Crochet a few stitches onto the crochet hook. Holding the chain on a flat surface, look at it from the side. Each chain is made up of a front and back loop and a loop underneath.
- 2). Count the number of stitches, beginning with the first loop away from the hook. Do not count the loop around the hook. Count each loop, going away from the hook to the end of the row. The beginning slip knot is at the back of the real stitches.
- 3). Place stitch markers every 10 to 20 stitches in long chains to keep track of the number of stitches. Short pieces of a contrasting color yarn can be substituted for the stitch markers. Simply loosely slip-knot short pieces of yarn to the stitch every 10 to 20 stitches. The pieces can be moved up every five or six rows.
