- 1). Clean the floor thoroughly with household floor cleaner and a mop. Let it dry completely.
- 2). Measure for the middle of one side of the floor, and the middle of the side across from it, using a tape measure. With a helper, hold a chalk snap line from the middle mark at one side to the middle mark at the other. Stretch the string tight and snap the line, dividing the floor into halves.
- 3). Repeat for the remaining two sides of the floor, measuring for the middle of each and stretching the string across, but don't snap it yet.
- 4). Lay a carpenter's square at the intersection of the chalk line and the string. Adjust the string so that it's exactly perpendicular to the first chalk line. Stretch it and snap it, dividing the floor into quarters.
- 5). Peel the paper off the back of a self-adhesive tile. Press one edge of the tile to the floor, putting it on the lines at one corner of the intersection in the middle of the floor. Drop the rest of the tile into place. Set the tile firmly in place with the heels of both hands, pressing tightly.
- 6). Lay the next tiles off the first one, pressing one edge of a tile against one that's already laid, then dropping the rest into place. Keep the seams tight. Build out from the middle to the edges of the floor in a grid pattern, using the lines to keep it straight. Cut the tiles by the walls with a utility knife as needed, running the knife alongside your carpenter's square to score it and then snapping it.
