- 1). Buy as many black ink cartridges as you'll need for your inkjet printer. Make sure that the black and color cartridges are the same size in your model. If the color cartridge contains all three or six colors and is larger than the black cartridges, the black cartridge may technically fit but could cause problems. Make sure you buy enough cartridges to fill every slot. It's better to leave an empty cartridge in a slot than leave the spot empty, as the ink can dry out and clog the printer.
- 2). Turn on your inkjet printer. Only replace ink when the printer is on.
- 3). Open the printer lid. If it's an all-in-one model, the entire copy and scan tray will open. Otherwise, just the upper plastic lid will open. Wait a few seconds for the printer head to automatically set to the middle.
- 4). Grip the old color cartridges and pull directly up until they pop out.
- 5). Take off the plastic bags and plastic tabs from the new cartridges. Put the new black cartridges in the color slots and push down until each one clicks into place. Close the printer and print a test page to test the new cartridges.
