- 1). Sand smooth four wood lathing strips, each 1 by 2 by 48 inches. Apply two coats of varnish to all sides, letting the wood strips dry after each coat.
- 2). Lay the wood strips flat and stack them one on top of the other. Clamp the stack of strips together. Two C-clamps would work; two band clamps would be less likely to slip when you drill the holes. Draw a pencil line down the center of the top strip. Mark the length of the line at 1-inch intervals with a pencil.
- 3). Fit the electric drill with a 3/16-inch drill bit and drill a hole through all four wood strips at each pencil mark. Be certain to keep the drill bit absolutely vertical, using a drill press if you have one available.
- 4). Overlap the wood strips to make a rectangle the size you need. Insert bolts and wingnuts through the holes you drilled at the four intersecting points. Tighten the wingnuts to form a sturdy frame. Tack the fabric to the frame.
