- 1). Remove any obstacles from the concrete slab before the leveling process. Use a claw end of a hammer, a pry tool or a screwdriver to help you remove any old flooring or any other kind of material, dirt or debris.
- 2). Remove any glue or carpet residue from the slab surface, using a cloth dampened in boiling water. Place the wet cloth on the glue residue to make it soft and then remove it with a scrub sponge. Use the scrub sponge to go over the whole surface of the exposed concrete slab.
- 3). Treat the whole surface of the slab with a tough wire brush. Use a small broom or a brush to entirely remove the dust and dirt left by the brush.
- 4). Fill small cracks with crack sealer and bigger cracks with a sand mix compound. Wait for all the cracks to dry and harden, then rinse the slab with warm water.
- 5). Saturate the slab with water so it doesn’t draw water from the leveling compound. A dried leveling compound wouldn’t create a strong bond and will cause cracks and damage.
- 6). Mix the leveling compound based on the depth of the leveling layer you need. Basically, you're creating a new slab surface and the compound has to be suitable for the thickness of the new layer. If the leveling layer is more than ½ inch thick, use a concrete mix. Otherwise, use a resurfacing compound for the task.
- 7). Apply the leveling compound onto the concrete slab, using a trowel. Spread a layer of the compound all over the surface of the slab. Allow the leveling compound to dry for a few hours and smooth the surface with fine-grit sandpaper.
