- 1). Back up all of your data. Doing a clean install of Windows XP will reformat your hard drive and everything on the machine will be erased. Back up all of your data to an external hard drive or to DVDs before installing XP. You will also need to reinstall all of your programs, so make sure to have them handy as well. Make a set of recovery discs so you can restore your DV6000 to factory specifications in the event of a catastrophe.
- 2). Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your DV6000's optical drive.
- 3). Reboot your computer and enter your BIOS setup screen. You need to configure your BIOS to boot from your optical drive to install Windows XP. Get to the BIOS setup screen by hitting "F10" as soon as your computer begins to boot up and the HP logo is displayed. Go to the boot order menu and change the boot order so your DV6000 will boot from your Windows XP installation disc.
- 4). Reboot your computer and your Windows XP installation disc will start the installation process.
- 5). Press "Enter" to start the setup when the Welcome screen appears.
- 6). Read over the Microsoft Software License Terms and press "F8" to accept the terms and continue with the installation.
- 7). Select the hard drive on which you want to install Windows XP. This will set the installation program to reformat the drive before installing XP. Reformatting the drive will remove Windows Vista and erase in data on the drive.
- 8). Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the operating system. Your DV6000 will reboot once completed.
- 9). Enter your BIOS setup once again and configure your boot order to boot from your hard drive. Remove your XP installation disc.

Connect to the Internet and download all the necessary Windows XP updates to your DV6000. Windows Update is configured by default to automatically download important updates to your computer. If it does not begin to download updates automatically, click "Start > All Programs" and scroll down to "Windows Update." Click this to start updating your system. - 11
Reinstall your old programs and transfer your data back to your hard drive from your backup.
