- 1). Locate the color graphics display screen on the printer. If the control panel display is off, wake it up by pressing the control panel button.
- 2). Look for the ink level graphics on the screen. These icons look like drops of ink with a color on the bottom of the icon that corresponds to the color on the top of the printer cartridge. The green icon shows how much ink remains in the tri-color cartridge. The icon with black beneath it represents the black ink cartridge. The orange one shows the amount of ink left in the photo cartridge. These icons are only accurate if you are using HP brand print cartridges.
- 3). Determine if any of the icons is an empty or hollow drop. Empty drop icons indicate that there is very little ink remaining in the corresponding cartridge and it should be changed as soon as you notice the quality of the printing degrade.
