No Sound After Installing XP

    • 1). Power off your computer speakers and then turn them back on again. Unplug the speaker cable from the computer and reinsert it. (Ensure the connector plug goes into the green line-out port.)

    • 2). Click the speaker symbol in the lower-left corner of the screen. The speaker symbol is on the right side of the Windows taskbar. Make sure the "Mute" option does not have a check mark in it.

    • 3). Click the "Start" button and then the "Control Panel" link. Double-click the "Hardware and Sound" link option. Ensure that the volume slider for the speakers is not set to the "Low" position. Adjust the speaker volume settings if needed.

    • 4). Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the Windows XP desktop and then click "Properties" when the pop-up menu appears. Click the "Device Manager" tab at the top of the "System Properties" window.

    • 5). Click the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" option in the Device Manager. If there is no sound card or adapter listed in the Device Manager, or if the device has a yellow exclamation mark next to the device name, you must install the sound drivers from the installation CD for your motherboard or sound card.

    • 6). Insert the installation CD for the motherboard or sound card into the CD/DVD drive of the PC. Wait for the installation utility to display on the screen and then click the "Install" or "Setup" option to install the sound drivers for the motherboard or sound card. If prompted to do so, restart your computer. If you do not have an installation CD for you motherboard or sound card, visit the manufacturer website and download the latest sound drivers for Windows XP. After you download the driver file, double-click the setup file and follow the on-screen directions to install it. Reboot the computer if prompted.

    • 7). Replace the computer speakers with a pair known to work.
