How to Build Wooden Wheels

    Make the Felloes

    • 1). Measure and mark the 2-by-4 board every 10 inches with the tape measure and pencil. Cut four sections of board with the circular saw.

    • 2). Place the template for the Felloe, which is the outside rim of the wheel, on a piece of 2-by-4 board that you cut in Step 2. Trace the outline of the Felloe on the board with the pencil.

    • 3). Cut around the outline with the scroll saw. Repeat this step for the other three boards.

    • 4). Drill a 1-inch hole into each end of the Felloes that you cut in Step 4. Fill each hole with half an inch of wood glue. Insert a 2-inch dowel into the right side of each Felloe..

    • 5). Insert the left end of each Felloe into a dowel to create a round wheel shape. Secure the Felloes with a band clamp.

    Make the Hub

    • 1). Draw a 6-inch circle on a piece of plywood with the pencil. Cut around the pencil mark with the scroll saw. Repeat this process to cut out a second circle.

    • 2). Secure the two circles together with wood glue and nails using the nail gun. This will create the hub for the wheel. Drill a half-inch hole in the center of the hub with the power drill.

    • 3). Place the hub in the center of the wheel. Use the tape measure to verify that is it the same distance from each side of the wheel.

    Make the Spokes

    • 1). Place a straight edge over the top of the hub and wheel so that it is in-between the connected ends. Draw a line over the wheel and over the hub with the pencil. Readjust the straight edge and make another mark on the wheel and hub that is perpendicular to the first line.

    • 2). Drill half-inch holes along the edge of the hub on each pencil mark with the power drill. Each hole needs to be in the center along the edge of the hub.

    • 3). Drill a half-inch hole on each mark into the underside of the wheel.

    • 4). Cut a 2-by-4 board in half with the table saw to make two 1½-inch lengths of board.

    Assemble the Wheel

    • 1). Measure the distance from the hub to the bottom of the wheel and add 1 inch to the measurement.

    • 2). Transfer the measurement to the 1½-inch boards and cut spokes with the circular saw. Drill a half-inch hole into each end of the boards with the power drill.

    • 3). Apply one-quarter of an inch of wood glue into each hole on the wheel, the hub and the spokes. Insert a dowel into each end of the 1½-inch boards. Insert the boards into the holes in the hub and the wheel. Wait at least 12 hours for the glue to dry.
