- 1). Tie a square knot. Take two ends of two ropes. Hold rope one in your left hand and rope two in your right hand. Form an X shape by crossing rope one over rope two. Wrap rope one around rope two once so that you have the beginning of a bow, like tying your shoes. Cross rope one over rope two again so you form a second X. Wrap rope one around rope two to the left. Pull on both ends and tighten.
- 2). Tie a clove knot. Loop your rope around the object you want to tie the rope onto. Hold each end with a hand. Cross the right side over the left side so it forms an X. Then continue to wrap the same side around so it makes a full loop. Push the end of the rope under the loop you just made on the top side of the object. Pull on each end to tighten.
- 3). Tie a trucker's hitch knot. Begin by tying a simple knot on one end of the rope. Make a loop in the middle of the rope. Pass the loop over the knot. Wrap the free end of the rope around the object you're securing. Push the free end of the rope through the loop. Finish by making a simple knot on the free end of rope and then wrapping it around the loop. Pull it through the loop to secure.
- 4). Tie a taut-line hitch. For this one you need something strong and sturdy to hold onto, such as a pole. Wrap the end of the rope around the pole. Turn the rope below the line. Bring up on the other side, and pull up through the loop. Wrap around a second time above the first line, then tuck the free end through the first loop.
- 5). Tie a figure-8 knot.
