- 1). Clean your bar with mild soap and water, using a sponge. Don't allow water to pool up or sit on top of the bar. Have a dry towel on hand to wipe up the water as you go. Allow the bar to dry completely.
- 2). Use a paintbrush to trim the edges, corners and any grooves with polyurethane. Follow with a foam roller to apply the polyurethane to the flat areas of the bar. Polyurethane comes in matte, satin or gloss finishes. In general, a glossy finish will provide better protection, but any choice of polyurethane will protect the finish. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.
- 3). Lightly sand the first coat of polyurethane, and remove sanding dust with a damp cloth.
- 4). Apply a second coat of polyurethane using the same technique used to apply the first coat.
- 5). Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean your bar. Softscrub is a great choice for mild cleaning and is inexpensive and readily available.
- 6). Do not allow standing water to sit on your bar. Wipe up spills immediately. The topcoat you have applied should protect the bar from most spills, but if left for a long time, moisture will penetrate the topcoat. If a spilled drink does penetrate the surface of the bar, use fine-grit sandpaper to remove the stain, and touch up the paint or stain and topcoat.
- 7). Avoid putting hot drinks or pots on your bar top. Hot elements will cause burn marks. Use coasters or trivets to avoid scalding the top of your bar.
- 8). Apply a light coat of mineral oil to the bar once a year as the finish begins to dull. Mineral oil will condition the wood and keep it looking great.
