- 1). Use your sand blaster to mechanically abrade the surface you wish to protect, to help the epoxy primer adhere. It is very important that the surface of your material be completely clean and free of all chemicals, sand, oil spots, or other stained areas.
- 2). Mix the epoxy primer and the activator in two separate containers with two different mixers, for the required amount of time. The mixing time will vary depending on the brand, so read the instructions carefully.
Combine the two mixtures in a third clean container and mix them together for the appropriate amount of time. Only mix enough to use for that day or hour of working time. - 3). Remove enough for you to work with from the mixed material. Use your squeegee or brush and get a good amount on it, then begin spreading it evenly over your surface. Keep working with it over the whole surface until the epoxy primer is the right thickness and consistency. It should ideally be in a moderately thin layer that is evenly spread out for it to be at its full effectiveness.
- 4). Clean all brushes, squeegees, containers and working area immediately after using epoxy primer, while it is still wet, using acetone. If the primer is allowed to dry it will require mechanical abrasion to be removed. Short of using a sand blaster on your equipment, you may have to dispose of it if it is not cleaned off in time.
- 5). Wait until the epoxy primer is completely dried, with no tackiness, before applying a top coat. Painting over a surface that is still tacky will reduce the effectiveness of the epoxy primer in protecting the material from the elements.
