- Display collectibles above kitchen cabinets.Modern elegant kitchen image by MAXFX from Fotolia.com
The space above the kitchen cabinets need not go to waste. In decades past, the spot was occupied by a chunky wall piece called a soffit. Now the open area between the cabinets and ceiling is prime real estate. Today's cabinets have more visual interest, with varying heights and elaborate moldings. This shelf space is ideal for displaying eye-catching items. - A grouping of baskets of various shapes, sizes, textures and colors is a classic country look. Not only does the display provide natural, rustic style, it keeps these utilitarian containers close at hand for snacks, breads and the like. Vary the height, style and material of the baskets used for a more interesting display.
- For a traditionally elegant kitchen, greenery atop the kitchen cabinets softens the hard edges and adds color. Vines, ivy and other trailing plants look best. Though many styles of greenery are plastic and artificial looking, newer types made of softer materials more closely simulate the real thing. These faux plants, however, can be more expensive.
- Showcase a prized collection by displaying it above the kitchen cabinets. Painted tole trays, creamware, antique blue and white plates, decoys and handmade pottery all dress up the space above the cabinetry. Grouping any collection together makes more of an impact than spreading the collection across a room in various locations.
- Many Christmas decorations stay in a basement bin during the holidays. Those extra Santa Claus figurines and brass reindeer, or even a miniature Victorian village, can add seasonal interest atop the kitchen cabinets. Try jack-o-lanterns for Halloween, cornucopias for Thanksgiving, and bunnies for Easter. The options are limited only by the imagination.
