What is a Hashtag?
On Twitter and some but not all other social media sites, the pound or '#' symbol is used right before a word to create a hashtag. These are simply a way of indexing posts by subject, to help you find and contribute resources, announcements, or much-needed humor.
First, Look Within Your Company, Organization, or Industry
Start your Twitter hashtag research by looking at your own company or organization, especially if you work within a large-scale system with a lot of teams or departments. These may go beyond just the organization's name. The marketing department can likely inform you of your organization's official hashtags, but don't forget teams that may be offering promotions, like the sales department, for example.
How to Write or Create Your Own Hashtag
Hashtags are easy to use. Probably the best way to gain confidence using hashtags is to study how others use them.
You will notice right away that people use a variety of post formats. I suggest writing your message or article title first, then providing the link to your website or that article, followed by hashtags. You can use as many as you have room for because these do count against your precious 140 characters.
Simply separate multiple tags with a space. Do not put a space between the '#' symbol and the word(s) because Twitter will not see it the same way you intended it. As you can see from the examples below, simply capitalize the first letter of each word if your hashtag is a phrase of several words. While capitalization is not required, this makes it more readable.

While this article focuses on Twitter, many of these hashtags are used on other social media platforms as well.
