- 1). Repel rats naturally by using peppermint oil. Rats are not fond of the smell of peppermint, which makes it an effective repellent. Soak some cotton balls in the peppermint. Make sure that they are saturated. Place the cotton balls in areas where rats are likely to crawl. Replace the old cotton balls with cotton balls with fresh peppermint oil at least twice a week.
- 2). Use ammonia to repel rats naturally. Mix one part ammonia with one part water. Soak old socks or a cloth in the ammonia and squeeze out the excess liquid. Place the cloth where the rats are likely to enter the home. Check the cloth at least once a week and replace if necessary.
- 3). Use steel wool to plug all the holes where rats may enter the home. Steel wool is an effective method that is often used to repel rats, as it is difficult for rats to chew through it. The steel wool is more suitable for small holes, but larger holes should be blocked with metal screen.
