- 1). Connect your Korean keyboard to your computer's USB or PS/2 Serial port.
- 2). Power up your computer.
- 3). Open a text editing program such as Word or Notepad to test the keyboard. You might need to install additional drivers, language support, or software to achieve full functionality. Try to type using a few letters, test the number pad and function keys as well. If your computer does not immediately recognize your input, the keys are incorrectly mapped, or if you cannot display Hangul letters, you will need to install Korean language support.
- 4). Open the Start Menu, then select the Control Panel. From the Control Panel, select "Regions and Languages." Click on the tab labeled "Keyboard and Languages" and locate the button labeled "Add" next to the "Change Keyboard" option window. Click on this button and select "Korean" from the list of displayed languages. From the Korean sub-menu, highlight the options "Keyboard" and "Microsoft IME," then click on the button labeled "Apply" to save your changes. This will add Hangul character support to your computer and allow you to correctly type using a Korean keyboard.
- 5). Press the Ha/En key to switch between Hangul and English input. This key is usually located next to the space bar, but might be in a different location depending on the model of keyboard you own.
- 6). Use the "Shift" button to switch between characters on keys that feature multiple characters. Generally the top row of keys will have two Hangul characters associated with each key.
- 7). Place the text cursor to the right of a block of Hangul text and press F8 to convert it into Hanja characters. Hanja are ideographic symbols that represent entire words or concepts. They are borrowed from Chinese and were used before the adoption of the Hangul alphabet. These symbols are still mixed into written language, so being able to use them while learning is a valuable asset. Be aware that not every word will have a Hanja equivalent.
- 8). Place the text cursor to the right of a Hanja character and press "F7" to convert the word into Hangul characters. This can be useful for learning the meaning or pronunciation of complex Hanja characters. With a little practice, you should be able to use your Korean keyboard with ease for both English and Korean typing.
