- 1). Measure each edge of the floor and mark the middle of each. Snap the string of your chalkbox from one of the middle marks to the one across the floor from it, dividing the floor in half. Snap the string against the floor to make a straight line.
- 2). Stretch the string between the two remaining marks, so it intersects the first line. Set a carpenter's square at the intersection and adjust the position of the string so it's exactly perpendicular to the first line. Snap the string, so the floor is divided into four squares that meet in the center.
- 3). Pull the paper backing from the back of a tile. Press it to the floor at the center of the room, in one of the four corners formed by the intersection. Press the tile firmly down with both hands.
- 4). Pull off the paper from the second tile. Press it in place next to the first tile, butting the edges tightly to each other.
- 5). Continue, building your way out from the middle of the room to the edges in a grid pattern, butting the edges of the tiles tightly to each other.
- 6). Cut tiles for the perimeter of the floor. Make the cuts by laying the square over each new tile, scoring along it with your utility knife, then bending it until it snaps. Set the tiles in place with the cut sides facing the walls.
