- 1). Measure around your neck to determine how long you want your hemp necklace to be.
- 2). Cut one length of hemp a few inches longer than twice the length you want your necklace. Cut another length of hemp about 10 times as long. For example, a finished necklace measuring 16 inches will require one 36-inch length of hemp and one 160-inch length.
- 3). Fold each hemp strand in half and line up the folds. Make a loop with the strands and bring the folded ends up through the loop to tie an overhand knot. Tie the knot about half an inch from the folded section, leaving a loop for your clasp.
- 4). Tape the loop to a flat work surface. Spread the strands out in front of you with the longer strands on the outside and the shorter base strands on the inside.
- 5). Bring the strand on the right over the two middle base strands and under the strand on the left. Bring the strand on the left under the two base strands and through the loop you formed with the rightmost strand. Pull the two outer cords to tighten the half knot.
- 6). Tie another half knot, but this time start by bringing the cord now on the left over the two middle strands and under the right strand. Bring the right strand under the two middle strands and over the loop formed by the left strand. Pull the second half knot tight to form a square knot.
- 7). Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the necklace is about a half inch shorter than you want it. Gather the four strands together and tie an overhand knot up against the final square knot. Trim the excess cord one quarter inch from the knot and slide the knot through the loop at the other end to fasten the necklace.
