- 1). Wipe down the area you're repairing with tack cloth to prevent any interference with the wood putty.
- 2). Nail the two cracked pieces together with angled nails and a hammer. The number of nails will depend on the length of the crack, but two should be sufficient. A small hammer may work better than a standard size hammer, as it's less likely to dent the surrounding area.
- 3). Fill the crack generously with wood putty.
- 4). Wipe away the excess putty with a clean cloth. This will prevent the putty from sticking to areas around the crack.
- 5). Leave the area to dry for a few hours, or as directed by the brand of putty you use.
- 6). If you've used too much putty and the finish is lumpy, lightly sand the area with a small piece of fine 600-grit sandpaper.
- 7). Stain the repaired area, if desired or necessary. Follow the directions of the stain that you choose.
