- 1). Right-click on "My Computer" on your Windows XP desktop. Select "Properties."
- 2). Click the "Advanced" tab. Select "Settings" from the "Startup and Recovery" section. Press "Edit" from under the "System Startup" heading to view the Boot.ini file.
- 3). Change the value after the "timeout=" line to define how many seconds the boot menu should be displayed before automatically loading the default operating system.
- 4). Modify the text after "default=" if you want to change the default operating system; by default, Windows XP will make itself the default operating system if it is installed on partition 1.
- 5). Modify the entries underneath the "[operating systems]" heading to change the operating systems displayed on the boot menu. Delete a line to remove that operating system from the list. Change the text in the quotes to modify the text that is shown for each option on the menu. Copy a line and paste it, changing the partition number and name to create a new entry on the boot menu.
- 6). Save the Boot.ini file and close it. Hit "OK" on all open windows and reboot the computer.
