- Fabric softeners were created in the beginning at the 20th century from emulsified water and oil in an effort to create a less-stiff feel to washed clothes. Throughout the years, fabric softeners have evolved from homemade concoctions to thoseversions made by Downey, Snuggle, Bounce, Arm and Hammer, Gain and others. Downey introduced scented fabric softeners in the 1970's. Later, the Downey ball came out. The ball slowly releases fabric softener onto the clothes as the washing machine goes through the final spin.
- The softening agents in softeners reduce or eliminate static cling. Fabric softener can also allow clothes to feel much softer and not quite as stiff as with laundry soap alone. Using fabric softener also cuts down on drying time.
- Some softeners are made from hypoallergenic agents that will not harm the skin. Place some sheets throughout living areas to eliminate musty odors or pet smells.
- Fabric softener in liquid form is often times concentrated, so only a few a few ounces at a time are needed.
- Both liquid and dryer sheets are designed to work during the final rinse cycle in the washing machine or during the heat process of the dryer cycle.
