- Visit your local fabric store and browse through the fleeces. Thicker fleece makes a nicer blanket. Fleece comes in a wide array of prints and colors, so you will have a lot of options from which to choose. For your fleece blanket, you will need two pieces of fleece. Choosing a patterned piece and a coordinating solid piece makes for an attractive blanket. For a small blanket, get one yard of each piece of fabric. For a larger blanket, purchase two yards of each type of fabric.
- Cut the salvage edges off each piece of material. These are the machined edges rather than cut edges. On fleece, the salvage edge is usually not as soft as the rest of the material, so cutting it off ensures your blanket will be soft all the way around.
Once you've cut the edges, lay one piece of fleece over the other. If your patterned piece has a side you like better, make sure that it is facing out. Holding the fabric together, cut a 4-inch by 4-inch square from each corner through both layers of fleece.
Cut 4-inch strips through both layers of fleece along each side. Each strip should be one inch wide and four inches long. Measurements can be approximate---they don't have to be exact. - Once you've cut fringe all the way around both layers of fabric, you're ready to tie off your blanket. Begin at one corner. Tie the first strip from the top layer to the first strip from the bottom layer. Use a loose granny knot to secure the two strips together. Then move on to the next pair of strips, and so on all the way around the blanket. When you tie the last two strips together, your double-layer, fringed fleece blanket will be complete.
