- 1). Look at the USB cable connection. This is roughly a half-inch long and even skinnier in height. The cable connection hooks up to most external hardware (such as printers and keyboards) and has a trident shaped icon next to it.
- 2). Check for a FireWire cable connector. This is similar in size and shape to a USB, only one end is slightly curved. There is a "Y" icon next to it and the cable port is used for higher-end external equipment, such as digital video cameras and external hard drives.
- 3). Look for a VGA hook up. This connects a computer to a monitor. It is about an inch wide and has nine small pin holes, used to send the video signal to the monitor.
- 4). Find a DVI cable hookup on the computer. This is similar to a VGA cable connection, in which it sends video to a computer monitor. The port is the same size as a VGA port, except it uses square connection points to send the video signal, instead of circular pin holes.
- 5). Check for a serial connection port (if using a computer older than Windows 98). This connection port is a larger version of the VGA cable and uses a large series of pins to send the data to and from the computer system. It has largely been replaced by USB and FireWire hookups.
