- Tablets built with the Android OS are more flexible than Apple's iPad. Android users have more control over how the device looks and what it can include. For example, notifications on an Android tablet can be customized to the user's preferences, as can the desktop. The iPad is a more structured device that may be a better fit those who are not interested in tinkering with the device and who are comfortable with the Apple interface.
- IPad users have more apps to choose from than Android tablet users. A March 2011 article featured in "PC Magazine" shows that the Apple App Store has more than 300,000 apps while the Android Market has more than 100,000. Apple only includes approved apps in its store, which reduces any security risk. Android allows outside developers to contribute apps that can put tablet owners at risk for viruses and other malware. However, the Android platform provides users with more detail about what each application accesses.
- Both the iPad and Android tablets offer internal storage for users. When it comes to external storage or expandable storage, Android tablets provide more options. The iPad does not include a USB port, which takes away the option of using flash drives and also makes it impossible to sync a camera and other devices without an additional connector kit. The Apple tablet also does not give users the ability to add storage with a microSD card whereas an increasing number of Android tablets offer both these capabilities.
- Consumers can choose from a wide range of Android tablets that are distributed through ViewSonic, Motorola, Samsung, Archos and Dell, among others. These tablets run from a few hundred dollars to upwards of $1,000 and come with variable storage capacities and features. The iPad shopper also has choice, although it is limited to two models --- the iPad with Wi-Fi or the iPad with Wi-Fi plus 3G. Each model is available with 16, 32 or 64GB of storage.
