- 1). Take any cement pieces apart if they are removable, and place them side by side.
- 2). Mix 4 parts hot tap water to 1 part liquid dish detergent, and clean the cement pieces with a soft brush. Remove any dirt or debris from the statuary. Rinse well, and let it dry.
- 3). Clean the statuary with an industrial solvent if there is a large amount of dirt and debris on it. Follow the directions on the solvent. Use a stiffer scrub brush to safely clean the fountain, being careful not to chip the concrete. Rinse and let it dry. It is vital that the fountain be completely clean before you add the paint.
- 4). Lay drop cloths of canvas or plastic on the ground of the work area. Place the cement statuary on top of the drop cloths.
- 5). Select the brand of spray paint for the cement statuary. (It must be appropriate for outdoor cement.) Due to the porosity of the cement statuary, you don't need primer.
- 6). Apply the spray paint in a left to right sweeping motion to evenly coat your cement statuary. This avoids runs in the paint. Use at least three coats of paint to ensure a thorough coating. Make sure that each coat dries as stated on the can before applying another coat.
- 7). Apply a waterproofing spray, as suggested on the can, over the entire cement statuary. The coat of waterproofer will act as a barrier to protect against harmful outside elements. The cement statuary must dry at least a full day inside before you place it outdoors.
