- 1). Ventilate the basement before using the caulk. Prepare a safe environment, especially in such an enclosed workspace.
- 2). Wipe the basement window frame free of any loose dirt or debris. The caulk is most effective in the absence of air. Use a damp cloth to clean the exposed seams and dry them completely before sealing.
- 3). Cut open the tip on a tube of silicone caulk with a sharp pair of scissors or a utility knife. Load it into the caulking gun.
- 4). Squeeze a bead of caulk 1/4 inch thick or less at one end of a seam in the window frame. Draw the gun steadily along the entire length of the joint.
- 5). Repeat the same steps for each seam surrounding the basement window. Allow the sealant to cure overnight.
