- 1). Cut the plywood into four pieces, two that measure 69 inches by 16 inches and two that measure 15 by 16 inches. If you want a shorter bench, reduce the length of the longer pieces.
- 2). Stand a 69-inch piece on its long side. Position the two shorter pieces on the end of the longer piece. Draw a line of glue on the short edge of one of the short pieces and push it into the edge of the long piece. Repeat with the other short piece.
- 3). Secure the two short pieces to the long piece with the 5/8-inch screws. Space the screws about 4 inches apart on each side.
- 4). Attach the other long piece of plywood to the short sides with glue and screws. You should now have a box.
- 5). Cut another piece of plywood that measures 69 inches by 16 inches. Draw a line of glue along all four sides of the plywood and place it on top of the box, aligning the edges. Secure it by drilling screws spaced 6 inches apart on all four sides.
- 6). Flip the box over and place a 68-inch long, 1-by-2 piece of wood along the top edge of the box. Use the 5/8-inch screws to secure it in place.
- 7). Place the 6-foot, 1-by-16 board on top of the box. It should be slightly longer than the box. Arrange it so it overhangs the box evenly on both sides.
- 8). Lift the top and place three cabinet hinges along its bottom edge. The hinges should join the lid to the 1-by-2 attached to the plywood box. Use the drill and screws to attach the hinges to the lid and box.
- 9). Sand the edges of the lid smooth and paint the inside of the bench. Allow the paint to dry overnight before closing the lid and painting the outside.
