- 1). Depress the clutch fully and place the car in neutral while starting the engine.
- 2). Move the shift lever into first gear with the clutch held down. Slowly release the clutch until the car starts to roll. Hold the clutch at that point -- the engagement point -- and slowly add gas, releasing the clutch fully as you do so.
- 3). Press the clutch in to change gear as you feel the strain on the engine increasing.
- 4). Move the shift lever into the next highest gear and repeat the process.
- 5). Downshift as the car slows by pressing in the clutch along with the brakes, and dropping a gear before releasing the clutch petal smoothly.
