- 1). Breathe deeply. This is a very basic but important step to overall relaxation and a calm state of being. If you are around someone you like, try not to let your thoughts get out of control and your breathing speed up. Focus on taking deep breaths through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Count to four slowly as you inhale and count to four as you exhale.
- 2). Put your thoughts into perspective. This works when you are around the person you like and when you are not. Before you see him, try to focus on thoughts that will uplift you and generally relax you for a long time. Remember that you are in control of your thoughts and emotions, and that you do not have to let thoughts of one person control your mind and get out of hand.
- 3). Avoid caffeine and sugar. While this may not seem like it will help you in your goal to appear more in control in front of the person you like, you may be surprised. Caffeine can often lead to sweaty palms, anxiety and overall nervousness. Since it speeds up your heart rate, it does not help you seem collected when you are around that special someone. Avoid it before you plan to run into her.
- 4). Stay close to a friend. Staying close to a good friend while you are around the person you like is a good idea because it will give you confidence and a sense of control. You will feel more at peace knowing that someone who cares about you and knows your feelings for this person is near. Furthermore, if you have a talk with your friend, she may be able to give you the confidence you need to relax.
- 5). Appreciate who you are. Learning to truly love who you are will give you energy, inspiration and an edge around the person you have a crush on. You may feel nervous, but if you know who you are and love yourself, you do not need to worry about appearing obvious. Talk to some friends to get a boost of confidence, or write in your journal about all your positive qualities.
