- Sandpaper or steel wool can be effective methods of removing rust from metal surfaces on old guns, car bodywork or kitchen appliances. Use a steel wool sponge or a thickly gritted area of sandpaper and rub it vigorously against the affected surface. Dipping the steel wool into vinegar or citrus juice will increase its rust removing powers.
- Standard household vinegar, available from most supermarkets and grocery stores, is effective at removing rust from some metal types. Vinegar doesn't need to be diluted in water. Simply place the vinegar in a container and leave the object in it until the rust breaks down. Once the rust is removed, wipe the object with a clean, soft cloth to lift off any residue. For larger items, such as metal statues or car trim, apply vinegar with a brush to the affected areas.
- Citrus fruits, such as lemon and limes, doused in a dash of baking soda, make an effective recipe against rust damage. Cut a lemon in half and rub the flesh on dry baking soda. The citric acid woks in conjunction with the baking soda to clean up rust spots on metal objects. This recipe also produces a pleasant aroma around the house, in contrast to many chemically based rust-removal products.
- Salt can be effective at removing rust, especially from kitchen utensils, such as scissors or cutlery. Place a teaspoon of lemon juice in a bowl and add a dash of salt. Dampen a clean cloth with the mixture and rub on the rusted areas until the shine returns.
