How to Add a Brick Accent Wall in the Bedroom

    • 1). Measure your wall and find the square footage. Divide this number by five. Each package of interior bricks usually will cover 5 square feet of wall. Check the specific bricks you want to buy ahead of time to ensure this formula works for your wall. Bring home an additional package of bricks as insurance.

    • 2). Wash the wall thoroughly to remove all dirt and grime. Dry the wall. Cover the surrounding floor in plastic cloths.
Lay out the lines of bricks on the floor in the order you want to place them on your wall. Allow for a gap of 1/2 inch between each individual brick and between the rows of bricks. Wearing safety goggles, cut the end bricks with a tile cutting saw outfitted with a diamond blade to fit into the measurements of your wall.

    • 3). Apply an even layer of mortar to your wall using a notched trowel. Spread the mortar over two square feet of the wall at a time so the mortar does not become too firm before brick application. Begin laying bricks at the bottom of the wall, leaving 1/2 inch from the floor and between each brick. Spread a thin layer of mortar on the back of each brick and begin pressing them into the wall from left to right. Use a level to assure each row is straight.
Allow the mortar to completely dry.

    • 4). Apply mortar to the spaces between the individual bricks and rows of bricks. Scoop a fist-sized amount of mortar onto a brick trowel and hold it close to the wall. Using a pointing trowel, push mortar into the brick joints.

    • 5). Wet your sponge and wipe the excess mortar off the wall. Frequently rinse your sponge and change the water in your bucket often throughout this step. Let the brick veneer wall dry completely. Remove plastic cloths.
