How to Do Complete XP Defrag

    • 1). Click the "Start" button on the Windows XP task bar and then click "My Computer."

    • 2). Right-click the target drive to be defragmented, such as the "C" drive and select "Properties" in the context menu that appears.

    • 3). Select the "Tools" tab and then click "Defragment Now" in the Defragmentation section. The Disk Defragmenter utility opens. Note the value in the "% Free Space" column for the selected drive in Disk Defragmenter. If there is less that 15 percent of available free space on your hard drive, run Disk Cleanup or remove files from your computer until 15 percent of your total hard drive space is free.

    • 4). Click the "Defragment" button to begin defragmenting the computer. Depending on the size of the disk and the degree of fragmentation, the process could take several hours.

    • 5). Click "OK" when a message appears on the screen saying the process is complete.
