- 1). Clean inside the toilet bowl with a liquid toilet cleaner. Spray the bowl with the cleaner, work it into the bottom and sides of the bowl with a toilet brush, and allow the cleaner to remain in the bowl for 10 to 15 minutes before you flush the mixture down the toilet.
- 2). Clean the outside of the toilet, including the base and the floor around the toilet, with an all-purpose bathroom cleaner. Use rags instead of paper towels, so you can scrub harder.
- 3). Clean all the other surfaces in the bathroom, including sinks, the shower, the bathtub, and the vanity top, with the all-purpose bathroom cleaner. These surfaces, especially the grout, can harbor mold, which will also cause unwanted odors in the space.
- 4). Remove and launder any bath mats. Wash the bath mats separately with hot water, and allow them to air-dry, or throw them into the dryer, according to the label's directions.
- 5). Walk out of the room and allow the odors created by cleaning to dissipate. Reenter the bathroom and take a sniff. If there is a lingering odor, tackle the next two issues -- the vents and drains.
- 6). Pull out any hair clogging the sink and tub drains. Pour 1/2 cup white vinegar followed by 1/4 cup baking soda down each drain. Allow the mixture to react for 20 minutes, then pour 1/2 gallon hot water down each drain. The mixture of white vinegar and baking soda will remove any remaining hair and grease, and the unwanted odor.
- 7). Vacuum the air vent inside the bathroom with a vacuum hose attachment. Removing the dust and debris from the front of the vent will allow air to circulate in the bathroom more effectively.
- 8). Set out a bowl of potpourri, light a candle, or place an air freshener onto the vanity to introduce a pleasant smell into the bathroom.
