How to Repair Windows XP Registry

    • 1). Download and install the Eusing Free Registry Cleaner (see Resources). This program works on many versions of Windows, including XP, and is free to download. Manually editing and changing a Windows XP registry requires considerable knowledge of the operating system to complete effectively. The Eusing Free Registry Cleaner scans your Registry for errors and other problems. It automatically fixes the Windows XP registry after first creating a backup of your current registry in case its resolution introduces problems. The program can identify dozens of common Windows problems, including missing driver files, invalid file paths and help files, font errors and deleted program shortcuts.

    • 2). Install the trial version of Registry Mechanic (see Resources). The trial version is free and never expires. However, it is restricted to a specific set of potential registry problems. You can always upgrade to the licensed version later if you the free trial is insufficient, and the company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if you're not satisfied or just want a refund. Registry Mechanic uses a proprietary algorithm to scan the Windows XP registry in search of problems. It provides features that are lacking in many competing repair services, including the ability to automatically "bleach" the empty hard disk space on your computer, which removes disk clutter and ensures that your deleted files are permanently unrecoverable.

    • 3). Download and run Registry Repair (see Resources). The program studies the computer's file associations, file extensions, fonts, start menu shortcuts, startup software and file paths for any errors or conflicts. It creates a "Restore" file so you can return the registry to a prior state, if desired. You can also instruct the program to ignore certain applications so it does not manipulate potentially sensitive files for important software you use regularly.
