- 1). Remove any clogs from the drain. If you have a trap over the drain, simply scoop the debris out with your hands. However, if your sink's clogs are more deep-seated, pour in some drain cleaner to help remove any of the food or hair that might be harboring odors.
- 2). Pour hot water down the drain for 15 seconds. For best results, boil a pot of water and pour away. Boiling water is hot enough to kill bacteria, which may eliminate a lot of the smells coming from the sink.
- 3). Shake 1/2 cup of baking soda onto the drain's surface. Baking soda works well to absorb odors. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then pour 1/2 cup of vinegar on top. This natural churning reaction will help clear the drain of any lingering residue. Finally, when the baking soda and vinegar have settled, pour boiling water down the drain for 15 seconds. This helps to distribute the baking soda mixture throughout the drain.
- 4). Strap on a pair of protective goggles. Pour a cup of bleach down the drain if the odor still hasn't receded. As an antibacterial product, bleach will continue to demolish the odor-causing bacteria for a clean drain.
- 5). Maintain your clean sink by scraping food scraps off plates and into the trash can before placing them into the sink to soak. Pour hot water and baking soda down the drain at least once a week to keep stenches at bay. Remove any clogs as soon as they arise, as they will continue breeding problems if you do not.
