Macrame Projects for Kids

    Macrame Bracelet

    • Macrame bracelets are among the first projects kids learn because the use only square knots. Cut two 3 yard cords for each child and have them fold the cords so two of the strands are twice as long as the other two. Tie a knot about 4 inches from the fold and clip the strands to a clipboard. For younger children, tape the two short ends to the clipboard and demonstrate the square knot, numbering the cords if necessary so their square knots do not turn out to be half knots. Slip beads on the shorter cords intermittently. When the bracelet is long enough, tie a knot the same as at the top and trim the ends. Have children tie a small knot on each strand to stop the strands from fraying.

    Macrame Keychain

    • Like the macramé bracelet, the keychain is a simple and popular macramé project for kids. It differs from the bracelet in that it is folded over a key ring. There is a wide choice of cord or jute, but this project requires light cord and light beads if car keys are going to be hung from the keychain.

    Plant Hangers

    • Cut six cords six times longer than the planned hanger for each child. If the hanger will be 3 feet, cut six 18 foot cords. Thread all the cords through a ring and make sure they are even on both sides. Hang it on a hook so it will be easier to tie knots. Cut another cord about 15 inches long to bind all the cords together. Make a loop at one end and wrap the other end of the cord around it. When you reach the end, slip it through the loop and pull it until it is secure under the wrap cord. Divide the cords into three groups of four and start tying half knots or square knots and stringing beads intermittently. When the project is about 1 1/2 or 2 feet in length, begin tying alternating square knots progressively smaller.

    Knotted Coaster

    • For projects that lay flat, kids have more success when using a macramé project board, which is generally a 12 by 18 inch board that has grids a child can use to make sure his knots are uniform. There are many designs and a library of knots, but for a beginner, a simple pattern of alternating square knots is good. Use different colors of jute to decorate the coaster instead of beads, which can mar the furniture they coasters are supposed to protect.
