- 1). Determine where the antenna and radio are to be positioned. The higher the antenna, the better the radio reception will be. Measure the amount of cable required, adding a few extra feet to allow for error.
- 2). Check the fixing for the radio antenna and the input socket of the radio. Many antennas have a coax plug input while others require you to screw the wire into place. Most radios have either a coax plug or an RCA input.
- 3). Purchase screened cable to wire your radio antenna. Screened cable provides better reception and reduces static. You can get radio antenna cable from most electrical stores. Purchase the necessary plugs to fit your radio and antenna.
- 1). Wire your radio antenna using a coax plug at either end, if both have the same input sockets.
- 2). Strip an inch of plastic from both ends to expose the wire mesh screening. Push the screening up neatly. Strip half an inch off of the protective cover to reveal the central wire that carries the radio signal.
- 3). Unscrew the cover from the coax plug. You will have a small clamp and the main plug. Put the cover over the wire (thread the end toward the end of the wire).
- 4). Slide the clamp (winged end first) until it meets the wire screening. Squeeze the clamp tightly together (use electrical pliers for a tighter fit). Insert the central wire into the pin in the coax plug so that the clamp touches the outer rim.
- 5). Screw the coax cover into the main plug. Repeat the process for the other end of the cable. Plug one end into the antenna and the other into the radio. Switch the radio on and tune it to your favorite radio station.
- 1). Wire your radio antenna with a coax plug following Steps 2 to 5 in Section 1 for one end of the cable. The other end will be fitted with an RCA plug.
- 2). Remove half an inch of the protective plastic from the other end of the cable to reveal the screening so you can fit an RCA plug. Undo the screening, and then neatly twist in the form of a wire. Strip a quarter inch from the inner plastic to expose the central wire.
- 3). Coat both wires with solder. Use a small clamp to hold the wire in place. Touch one of the wires with the soldering iron and introduce the solder. Let a small amount of solder melt. It will run down the wire and cover it in solder. Allow it to cool and then repeat on the other wire.
- 4). Remove the cap from the RCA plug and place it (threaded end toward the end of the wire) up the cable. Put the metal plug in a small clamp if you have one. Put the central wire in the pin. Solder the pin and wire together. Allow it to cool. Put the twisted wire on the outer flange of the RCS plug. Solder the wire to the flange. Let it cool.
- 5). Screw the cap on the plug and insert it into the radio's antenna socket. Insert the other coax plug into the antenna socket. Switch on your radio and tune it to the radio station of your choice.
