- 1). Cast on 40 stitches.
- 2). Work the knit stitch all the way across the first row. Turn your work.
- 3). Work the purl stitch all the way across the second row. Turn your work.
- 4). Work the knit stitch all the way across the next row, Turn your work. Continue alternating between a knit row and a purl row until you have completed 48 rows, or until you have a square washcloth. End with a purl stitch row. Everyone knits different, some tighter and some looser. Therefore, the number of stitches and rows can only be estimated for an eight-inch square washcloth.
- 5). Cast off the stitches on your left knitting needle. When you get to one loop left, remove the knitting needle. Cut a two-inch tail on the yarn. Pull the yarn tail through the loop and pull tight. Work the tail through the last row of knitting.
