  The creation of one's own set of rosary beads can be a spiritual experience, as the rosary beads are an integral part of prayer for many people. Like many spiritual devices, people often find that they are most comfortable with the objects that they make themselves, and this is yet another way for one to show the strength of their devotion.
  
  

Crucifix

• Of course, every set of rosary beads must have a crucifix. Your choice of crucifix may reflect on you, or be chosen in accordance with the types and appearance of beads you use. It may be an old, sentimental crucifix, or a new one to go with your new beads.
  
  

Small or Common Beads

• The majority of your rosary will be made up of one type of bead, called the common bead. Common beads are often smaller than the other beads, so that one can tell without looking at which point they are at in their prayers, although it is common to simply have them be a different color. You will need three of these beads, plus 10 for each decade you want on your rosary.
  
  

Large or "Our Father" Beads

• These beads are used at the end of each decade of small beads and are typically larger in size for the same reason that the small beads are small. However, like before, one may choose to use a different color or material instead of relying on the size of the beads. Depending on the style of rosary you are creating, you may need two large beads for the short strand of the rosary, and one more for each decade.
  
  

String or a Chain

• The beads will have to be attached together, either with pieces of string or a fine metal chain. The string or chain must be long enough to hold all of the beads in such a way that the short strand and crucifix are separate from the rest of the circle of beads. You may wish to tie off the string, or attach a clasp of some sort.
