How to Make a Crochet Slouch Bag

    Slouch Bag Body

    • 1). Treat the end of nylon thread by dabbing clear nail polish to prevent it from raveling and crochet 72 chain stitches, working each stitch loosely. Without twisting the foundation chain, slip stitch into the first chain stitch. For round one, work one chain stitch and single crochet into the first chain stitch. Work one single crochet into each chain around. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join. Turn the work.

    • 2). Crochet one chain stitch for the beginning of round two. Single crochet into the single crochet and skip the next two single crochet. Work one shell into the next single crochet. Skip the next two single crochet. Repeat this round from the first single crochet of this round to the end of the round. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join. Turn the work. You should have 12 shell stitches. For round three, work in the back loops of the stitches, crochet one chain stitch and single crochet into the back loop of each double crochet around to the end of the row. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join and turn the work.

    • 3). Work three chain stitches for the beginning of round four. Crochet six double crochet into the first single crochet -- counts as first shell. Skip the next three single crochet. Single crochet into the next single crochet and skip the next three single crochet. Crochet one shell into the next single crochet. Repeat from the first “skip the next three single crochet” to the last seven stitches. Skip the next two stitches and single crochet into the next single crochet. Skip the next three stitches and slip stitch into the third chain of the turning chain to join. Turn the work. You should have 12 shells.

    • 4). Continue crocheting into the back loops of each stitch in round five. Crochet three chain stitches. Work one double crochet 2 together (specialty stitch) into the next two stitches. This counts as your first cluster. Half-double crochet into the next stitch. Single crochet into the next three stitches. Half-double crochet into the next stitch. Work one 3-double crochet cluster into the next three stitches. Half-double crochet into the next stitch and single crochet into each of the next three stitches. Half-double crochet into the next stitch. Repeat from 3-double crochet cluster to the end of round five. Slip stitch into the third chain of the turning chain to join. Turn the work.

    • 5). Work one chain stitch to begin round six. Single crochet into the first stitch. Double crochet into the next stitch. Work a single crochet into the next stitch and double crochet into the next stitch. Repeat from “Work a single crochet into the next stitch” to the end of round six. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join. Turn the work. Work one chain stitch beginning round seven. Single crochet into each stitch around. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join and turn the work. Work rounds eight to 23 by repeating rounds six and seven eight times.

    • 6). Crochet three chain stitches for round 24. Work six double crochet into the first stitch for the first shell. Skip the next two stitches and single crochet into the next stitch. Skip the next two stitches and work a shell into the next stitch. Repeat from “skip the next two stitches” to the end of round 24. Slip stitch into the third chain of the turning chain to join. Turn the work. You should have 12 shells made. Repeat round three for round 25. Repeat round four for round 26. Repeat round five for round 27. Turn the work. Do not fasten off the yarn.

    Strap and Join Row

    • 1). Working from the wrong side, crochet one chain stitch and single crochet into each of the next seven stitches. Turn the work. You should have seven stitches.

    • 2). Crochet one chain stitch, then single crochet 2 together into the next two stitches. Single crochet into each of the next three single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the last two stitches. Turn the work. You should have five stitches.

    • 3). Work one chain stitch and single crochet into each single crochet across. Turn the work. Repeat this round 90 times more or until the strap is the length you want.

    • 4). Crochet one chain stitch. Work two single crochet into the first single crochet, one single crochet into each of the next three single crochet, two single crochet into the last single crochet and turn the work. You should have seven single crochet.

    • 5). Work one chain stitch, then single crochet into each single crochet across. Turn the work. Do not fasten off.

    • 6). Grip the right side of the strap and bag together, with the wrong side of the bag facing you. Match the last row of the strap to the corresponding stitches on the opposite side of the bag. Working through the double thickness, slip stitch into each stitch across. Fasten off and cut the thread with the scissors. Weave the ends in using the steel tapestry needle.

    Bag Base

    • 1). Turn the bag so the right side faces you. Working across the opposite side of the foundation chain, join the thread in the first chain stitch, work one chain stitch, then one single crochet into each chain stitch around. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join.

    • 2). Crochet one chain stitch and single crochet into each of the first two single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet in each of the next 26 single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next six single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next 26 single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next four single crochet. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join.

    • 3). Work one chain stitch and single crochet into the first single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next 26 single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next four single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next 26 single crochet. Single crochet 2 together into the next two single crochet. Single crochet into each of the next three single crochet. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join. Fasten off the thread with the scissors, leaving a long sewing length.

    Slouch Bag Finish

    • 1). Turn the bag so the wrong side is facing you. Sew the bottom seam with the sewing length you left earlier.

    • 2). Turn the slouch bag so the right side is facing you, and join the thread in the first stitch on the top edge of the bag to the left side of one strap. Work one chain stitch and single crochet in each stitch across the top edge of the bag. Single crochet in each row-end stitch across the side edge of the strap. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join. Fasten off with the scissors. Repeat the edging around the other edge of the bag and strap.

    • 3). Sew the snap with the sewing thread and needle to the inside, center top of the slouch bag.
