- 1). Select a registry cleaner. There are a variety available, ranging in price from free to around $30 or $40 dollars (2010). Most of these programs work in essentially the same way. Open your program and use the "Clean Registry" option. Some of the programs allow you to select options such as "Unused DLLs," "Orphaned Program Files," and other common registry errors. Ensure everything is checked.
- 2). Click "Run" or "Clean Registry" and allow the program to compile a list of errors. The error list will display in a separate window within the program when the search is completed.
- 3). Examine the list to ensure there is nothing that shouldn't be removed. Since these programs are typically safe, you shouldn't find anything on the list that shouldn't be removed. If you're in doubt about any entry on the list of registry errors, uncheck that error or de-select it, which prevents the cleaner from fixing the error. Once you've examined the list and made changes, select "Clean" or "Fix Errors" to correct the errors in your registry.
