- For machine-washable items, add 1 lb. of baking soda to your washing machine, as well as an enzymatic cleaner and regular washing machine detergent.
For carpet and upholstery -- when the stain is still wet -- place several paper towels over the stain, followed by several sheets of newspaper. Press firmly on the stain for a minute. Rinse the area with cool, clean water.
Use a carpet shampooer on dry stains, and deep-clean the carpeting or upholstery using only clean water and no soap. Do not steam clean, as the heat sets the stain and odor into the carpet. Afterward, use a pet odor neutralizer.
Wood floors can be cleaned by soaking them in white vinegar. - To remove mildew and mold from clothing, place about a cup chlorine bleach into a gallon of water, and place the garment into the bucket. Allow the clothing to sit in the bucket for 30 minutes. Run the item through your washing machine, with detergent. For nonwhite clothing, pour an entire bottle or two of peroxide into a bucket. Submerge it in the bucket for four to seven days. Finally, wash the item in your washing machine.
For nonwashable fabrics, apply a stain remover to the stain. Pat the stain, then apply a dry-cleaning solvent and allow the area to dry overnight.
Ceramic tile and vinyl flooring and walls can be cleaned using a mildew stain remover, bleach or a bar of nondeodorant soap. - Vinegar cuts through the tar left over from tobacco, and is perfect to use on floors to rid yourself of the stains and the stench.
Rent a carpet shampooer to tackle upholstery and carpeting, or you may coat the furniture in baking soda and leave it for a few day, then vacuum it up.
Throw curtains into the wash, and add enzymatic cleaner and detergent to the load to remove stains and odor from them. Finally, open the windows and air out your home. Open up a fresh can of coffee and leave it open for a few days. The coffee will absorb the odor. - For fabric, remove as much of the vomit as you can. Spray a prewash stain remover onto the spot. Toss the item into the wash on hot, and if the smell remains, rewash using an enzymatic cleaner.
For upholstery and carpeting, scrape off the vomit, then blot the stain using a dry-cleaning solvent. Once dry, sprinkle scented baking soda onto the spot, and vacuum after 15 minutes. This will remove any lingering odors. If the stain remains, stir 1 tbsp. of dish-washing soap with 1 tbsp. of white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Blot the stain using a clean cloth, then sponge with cold water.
