- 1). Inspect the back of your computer. Look to see if the video card has classic VCR inputs for video and audio (they will be three small ports colored (from top to bottom) yellow, red and white). Plug in the VCR cable which normally goes to the television into these ports. Purchase or download a program which allows direct recording to the hard drive (See Resources).
- 2). Purchase a VCR recorder if no applicable video and audio ports are attached to the video card. Attach the included USB cable that accompanies the VCR recorder into the USB port in the computer. Use the software from step one to record the video or, if no port is available, use the recorder to burn directly to a DVD. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive of the computer. Open the files on the DVD from the "my computer" screen and drag them onto the computer's desktop.
- 3). If none of the the above steps are possible, inspect the back of the television used with the VCR. If it is a newer model, search for an HDMI output. Link an HDMI to a USB cable into the port, and attach the USB port to the computer. Play the VCR normally on the computer and record the video signal onto the computer using the software from step one.
